The former Homestake Gold Mine was converted into the Sanford Underground Research Facility for the purpose of conducting multiple underground experiments. One of these experiments involves studying neutrino movement through the earth, and for this, part of the mine has been designated the ‘Long Baseline Neutrino Facility’ (LBNF). To facilitate the neutrino experiment, the LBNF needs all abandoned ore removed from the underground area via the original Ross Shaft Crusher, which has not operated in more than 20 years. Harrison Western was the General Contractor selected to repair/replace the crusher and conveyor, overseeing several teaming partners for the mechanical, electrical, and structural aspects and associated engineering of this highly specialized work.
